Among our membership are those for whom the annual pilgrimage is a tradition, with Barbi and Baard Solnordal being the original pilgrims in 1998. Mary and Keven Diggens and Trish Ritman, together with her late Husband, Hein, soon joined them. Others have followed.

Ken Field expressed gratitude for the ongoing patronage of Camberwellians.
A Fruitful Venture at the 19th Avoca Triples
By Sandra Brown
T
he chance of friendly competition in the bucolic surrounds of Avoca was sufficient to entice fifteen of our members to make the journey last
weekend, 16th and 17th November, 2013, for the annual staging of the Avoca Triples Tournament.
A weekend away in a Victorian country town, such as Avoca, is something to relish. This is wine country with many vineyards offering cellar door sales and wine tastings.

Accommodation is available in the town and also in nearby hamlets, such as Moonambel and Amphitheatre. Travel to the action on the piste is via small country roads with their retained roadside vegetation which makes for a very gentle drive.

The spending of our discretionary funds is a welcome boost to the local economy.

2013 saw the 19th staging of this popular event by the Pyrenees Petanque Club; the inaugural event was held in 1994.

30 teams (90 players) registered on Saturday for the event, with players from as far away as Newcastle and Adelaide, and an additional 5 teams (15 players) entered on Sunday for the Social Competition.

105 registrations all up, from ten affiliated clubs and two non-affiliated clubs, together with some day licences.
The folk at Avoca put on an excellent tournament which attracts many good players offering keen competition.

Camberwell ladies, Barbi, Mary and Sandra, were very excited with their 3rd in the Principale, Antoine, Nicole and Trish were 2nd in the Consolante, and Gloria Wales was a member of the team (that included Pierette Mayor & Danielle Bommarito) which came 2nd in the Social.

The official results can be found here and photographs here.

of the series of monthly Social Petanque Competitions.

Being the morning after our Christmas Party some eighteen members enjoyed a festive lunch of leftovers before taking to the piste.  Many commented that Saturday was easier to attend as Friday night after work involved lengthy battles with traffic. Rob Head, a past member of the Committee, was amongst this group, coming to play again after an absence some years. (Interesting he has not lost any of his skills with the boules!)

Games proceeded in beautiful sunshine with John Cook and Rob Joy marshalling the players to keep things moving.  Players keenly noted the date of the next Saturday Social in their new diaries, Saturday 4th January 2014.

of the series of monthly Social Petanque Competitions.

Saturdays include 1st February, 1st March and 15th April 2014.
We set the tables out as per last year’s plan with the red and green tablecloths with holly, Christmas balls and tinsel down the center of the tables. Trish and Nicole look after the decorating, making the tables look very decorative.

Volunteers provided the starters and although we had cut back on last year, we still had more than could be consumed. Club members were very generous in preparing more than was asked for hence, we had a great deal over, which made for a great lunch the next day for those who fronted up to play the first of the Saturday Social Petanque days.
Members and guests filled up on various entrees, as they were so good. A particular favorite was Narelle’s hot bacon and mushroom dip. The main course comprised of roast beef, stuffed chicken roll, salmon and crusty bread along with a variety of tasty salads.
I would also like to thank everyone who participated, be it by cooking, decorating, purchasing of supplies and generally lending a hand during the evening. Willing hands just appeared which meant that the workload did not fall on just a very small group.

Desert included “plunger coffee”, a large fruit platter, Christmas cake, mince tarts, chocolates and a very good selection of chesses.

During the evening the Club President, Richard Tarlinton gave a short speech in which both John Ross and John-Paul Ernst received recognition for their hard work throughout the year.
It is now just over 2 years since we moved into Lynden Park and I think it is safe to say we have settled in well. 2013 has been a busy year with CPC hosting the National Triples Championships in April and the Victorian State Doubles Championships in September as well as our usual tournaments and inter club challenges. All these events mean quite a bit of work for our members. The Committee thanks Rob Joy for the great job he has done in rallying the list of volunteers and allocating tasks, his work has lighten the Committee's load considerably and of course many thanks to all volunteers who have regularly answered the call.

2014 is shaping up as another busy year, starting off with Club Singles Matches being played on the 1st Friday and Saturday of January, February, March and April. Also we plan to run a set of training skills on the last Friday of the month in January, February and March, these sessions will run concurrently with normal Friday play. We have the 'Camberwell Classic Mixed Doubles Tournament' on 2nd of February, I have sent an expression of interest to PFA for CPC to host International Doubles Championship at the end of March. On 12th & 13th April we have a fun road trip to Avoca planned; our task is to bring the Trusty Tape Trophy back to Camberwell. The Committee is also planning an Open Day on 4th of May, after which I think we should rest on our laurels for a while.

With the festive season upon us and the year fast drawing to a close, I wish to thank the Committee for its continued commitment and work in keeping CPC ticking along so well.

P.S. - As Lynden Park Facility has been hired out on Boxing Day, we have planned, in lieu of Boxing Day to play on Friday, 27th December. Come along around 12:00 midday for a bit of lunch, bring your Christmas leftovers to share. Play will start at 1:00 pm.

ur Christmas Party was a great success, with 56 people enjoying the festive cheer.
Chris wishes to pass on her grateful thanks to all who helped with food, setting up, decorating, and cleaning up afterwards. Thank you, you all do CPC proud.
The nibbles were fantastic the tables looked beautiful and the food was delicious. Our thanks go to Chris Butler for her hard work and organisational skills; she did a wonderful job bringing it altogether.

The old website, originally constructed by Bill Claiborne, has been replaced by a new one at www.petanquevictoria.com.au or go here.

An interesting feature is the calendar where there is the option to have a flyer linked for download. A red file icon indicates that a flyer is available. However on other pages, a blue file icon will produce a document.
